Rules and Regulations for Chili Cooks
- CHILI COOKED OFF SITE
- Again this year all chili will be prepared in advance off site.
- Each cook will prepare at least three (3) gallons of chili.
- Cooks will prepare and serve their chili in as sanitary a manner as possible.
- Cooks will provide their own hot plates or self-contained propane burners, to heat their chili pots. Electrical connections will be available.
- Cooks are responsible to clean their area and remove all equipment and supplies at the end of the day.
- ONE CHILI PER HEAD COOK
Each head cook will be responsible for one pot of chili to be judged, and only one sample cup of chili from any pot can be turned in for judging.
- INSPECTION OF CHILI SERVING CONDITIONS
Each booth or table is subject to inspection by the Head Judge or a designee to determine that proper conditions are met. Failure to comply is grounds for disqualification.
- COOKS MAY HAVE TO TASTE THEIR OWN CHILI
At the direction of the Head Judge or his designate, cooks may be asked to remove the cover from their chili pots and taste their own chili before turning it into the judges. Refusal to comply will result in disqualification.
- NO "FILLERS" IN JUDGES CHILI
These include macaroni, rice, hominy or toppings such as cheese, onions, etc. Once the official judging sample has been turned into the judging committee, we encourage you to add fillers or toppings to your chili, to increase the volume of chili we have on hand to offer to the public.
- COOKS SIGN IN
Chili cooks will sign in at the Judges booth as they arrive. They will be issued a judging cup with a secret number, which will then be covered with tape so as not to be visible to the judges or others.
- PROTECT THE JUDGING CUP
Once the judges cups are issued each head cook is responsible for his or her judging cup. Cooks must not remove or tamper with the numbers on the outside of the cup. Any damaged or altered cup must be replaced prior to turn in or the altered cup of chili may be disqualified.
- FILLING THE JUDGING CUPS
Cups will be filled at least 3/4 full.
- CHILI TURN IN
Chili will be turned in at 11:00 AM to the Judges' assistants at the judging area. Chili is to be turned in by the head cook of each team.
- JUDGING STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES
- This will be a "blind" judging with the judges not aware of which chili cook they are judging.
- Judges will refrain from commenting or discussing their ratings or reactions with the other judges. This includes making "faces" or uttering such exclamations as "Wow!", "Ugh!", or similar comments.
- Each chili is judged on the following five points:
- aroma
- color
- taste
- after-taste
- consistency
- PEOPLES’ CHOICE AWARD
- In addition to the judges selections of the top three chilis, the public will decide which chili cook/team they liked the best, and vote for that team to be given the"People’s Choice Award".
- As each adult person attending the day’s activities arrives, they will be issued one silver bean at the entrance.
- Once they have sampled the various cooks’ chilis they will choose their favorite, and drop their silver bean in the jar provided at each cooks’ table or booth. The outside of the jars will be covered so that the contents cannot be seen.
- The covered jars will be turned in to the judges' assistants at the judging area, who will count the beans in each jar, and determine the winner.
Helpful Hints
You may want to "field test" your chili before the day of the competition, to see how you and your friends would rate it against the five points listed above.
Although cooks are only required to prepare three (3) gallons of chili for the competition, we suggest you make a larger batch - say five (5) gallons or more. The team with the most chili always has the best chance to win the People's Choice Award.
Give away extra goodies with your chili samples for the public, at your booth or table, such as chopped onions, grated cheese, hot peppers, beans, etc. This "stretches" your batch of chili and goes a long way in getting votes for the Peoples Choice Award.
Add a bit of showmanship to your booth or table, with decorations, or dress in wild, crazy or colorful costumes. Music may be allowed as long as the volume is limited and it does not interfere with your neighbors or the event entertainment. Have fun!
